From the moment I stepped off the plane in Georgia, I knew I was in for a sensory experience like no other. The sights, smells, and sounds of this incredible country were overpowering, and I couldn’t wait to dive in. As I settled into my one week itinerary, I knew that Georgia was going to be my favorite destination in the Caucasus. Here’s everything you need to know about planning your own trip to Georgia.

When it comes to practical matters, Georgia is an easy country to navigate. The four seasons offer something for everyone, with spring and autumn being particularly beautiful. Accommodation options are plentiful, and Georgia is known for its excellent value. You’ll want to plan ahead for transportation, as the Mashutka minivans are the most popular and reliable way of getting around.

The capital city of Tbilisi is an essential stop on any Georgian itinerary. The stunning Narikala fortress, Rustaveli Avenue, and Sameba cathedral are just a few of the highlights. Take a day trip to the David Gareja desert area or head further south to Sighnaghi for a taste of traditional Georgian culture.

No trip to Georgia would be complete without a visit to Kazbegi. This region of Mt. Kazbek is a hiker’s paradise, with the beautiful Gergeti Trinity Church being a must-visit spot. The Stepantsminda town is a retreat for luxury lovers, with the Kazbegi Rooms Hotel being one of the best accommodations in the area.

Of course, there are plenty of other destinations to explore in Georgia. Spend some time in the Black Sea port city of Batumi, visit the unique Svan people in Upper Svaneti, or return to Gori to explore the birthplace of Stalin. The only question is, how much time do you have?

While it’s certainly possible to explore Georgia in a week, those with more time will have the opportunity to dig deeper into the country’s unique culture and scenery. Whether you’re spending one week or two, there’s no doubt that Georgia is a destination that will leave an indelible mark on your senses.
