As I stepped off the train in Hualien City, the salty sea breeze greeted my senses, reminding me that I was about to embark on a journey through the breathtaking Taroko Gorge (太魯閣國家公園), a natural wonder nestled on the northeastern coast of Taiwan in Taroko National Park. The air was crisp and invigorating, filling my lungs with a refreshing aroma of nature.
I couldn’t wait to explore the 19-km-long canyon that had captured the hearts of travelers from around the world. Taroko National Park, as it is now known, is a true gem of Hualien County. Its towering crags, covered in subtropical forests, create a stunning backdrop for the vibrant life that thrives within its boundaries.
The park is a sensory playground, with sights, sounds, and smells that are sure to leave a lasting impression. As I embarked on my adventure through the gorge, I couldn’t help but marvel at the incredible marble formations that surrounded me. The result of millions of years of tectonic activity, these marble cliffs seemed to touch the sky, their smooth surfaces inviting me to reach out and feel their cool touch.
One of the highlights of my journey was the Changchun Shrine, an iconic sight that stood gracefully on top of a cascading waterfall. The sound of rushing water, combined with the peaceful ambiance of the shrine, created a sense of serenity that was truly unforgettable. I closed my eyes and let the sound of the waterfall wash over me, immersing myself in the moment.
As I continued my exploration, the Shakadang Trail beckoned me with its mysterious allure. Etched on a cliffside beside a rocky stream, the trail offered a mesmerizing display of rock folds and delicate Tung trees that adorned its path. The sight of the vibrant flowers in full bloom painted a beautiful picture against the backdrop of the rushing stream.
The Tunnel of Nine Turns was another breathtaking spot that left me in awe of the sheer power of nature. The narrow gap between the marble cliffs seemed to defy gravity, as if the rocks were about to embrace each other. I could almost hear the echoes of the explorers who first ventured into the canyon and faced the treacherous path ahead.
The Liwu River, with its relentless force, had carved a path through Taroko Gorge, leaving behind magnificent creations such as Yanzikou, also known as Swallow Grotto. As I walked along the 1.4km trail, I marveled at the spring-showered cliffs and the curious rock formations that dotted the landscape. The sounds of Pacific Swallows and House Swifts filled the air, adding a symphony of nature’s voices to the experience.
Tianxiang, a river terrace recreational area, was a welcomed respite along my journey. Surrounded by towering mountaintops and crisscrossed by tunnels and bridges, it offered a unique vantage point to appreciate the challenging topography of Taroko Gorge. The panoramic views of the confluence of the tributaries to the Liwu River were simply awe-inspiring.
I couldn’t resist the temptation to tackle the Tiansiang-Baiyang Trail, despite its difficulty. As I made my way up the steep trail, I found myself faced with rappelling down a chain to continue my journey. The sense of adventure mixed with the historical significance of the Tapido settlement, which I encountered along the way, made this experience all the more unforgettable.
As I reached the plateau of the Sibao Mountain, I was rewarded with panoramic views of Tian Xiang Park and its iconic Catholic church. The serene atmosphere of the park provided a perfect moment of reflection, as I took in the beauty that surrounded me. The sense of peace and tranquility washed over me, leaving me feeling rejuvenated.
On the opposite side of the mountain, the Xiangde Temple stood tall, its majestic presence commanding attention. The Buddhist Linzizong complex, with its 7-story Tian Feng Pagoda and the Giant Statue of Guan Yin, added a touch of spirituality to the landscape. The sense of awe I felt as I stood in the presence of these structures was indescribable.
Lastly, the Qingshui Cliff offered a different perspective on Taroko Gorge. Instead of overlooking the Liwu River Valley, this 21km stretch of cliff faced the mighty Pacific Ocean. The breathtaking coastal views left me in awe of the power of nature, as the crashing waves highlighted the resilience of those who built the roads that wind through the park.
As I reflected on my journey through Taroko Gorge, I couldn’t help but understand why a lost tribesman emerged from the marble maze and exclaimed, “Taroko!” The beauty and grandeur of this natural wonder are simply unparalleled. From the soaring cliffs to the serene temples, Taroko Gorge is a sensory delight that captures the essence of Taiwan’s natural splendor.
Getting to Taroko Gorge is a relatively easy journey. From Taipei, a two-hour train ride will transport you to Hualien City. From there, a short walk will bring you to the bus station, where you can purchase a full-day bus pass for unlimited access to and around the national park. The convenience and accessibility make Taroko Gorge an ideal destination for any traveler seeking a truly unforgettable experience in Taiwan.
